Every once in a while I need to slow down and renew. So, here I am on a retreat. I can go at my own pace and meditate or fill my days with talks and classes. I brought my sketchbook and will be updating my journal each Wednesday with sketches. Above is a drawing of my cushion, my hat and my sketchbook. As the saying goes, one picture is worth a thousand words. I usually write about 750 in my journal, so the drawings are almost as good!
Meditation is a tool. You are freeing your mind and heart so you can see situations as they really are.
Meditation is a tool. It is simply sitting on a cushion or chair, looking with a loose gaze ahead of you (or, if you wish, closing your eyes) and following your breath, not forced, in – out, in – out. Focus on the breath and when a thought arises, just label it “thinking” and go back to the breath. Even five minutes a day is helpful. All sorts of thoughts will arise, but just label them “thinking.” You are not your thoughts. You are freeing your mind and heart so you can see situations as they really are.
What meditation does for me is that I can pull back from my own “stuff” and get a better idea of “the larger picture.” The main thing is not to beat yourself up for any thoughts you may have – thoughts are just thoughts.
Max started with his mediation practice when he was in Japan studying vegetable carving and food decorating. Now he’s gotten me into it and I find it quite relaxing in the long run.
So, here I am! When I come back renewed in a few weeks, I will be writing my regular journal entries again about the quirky characters and Ah-Ha! moments in my life.
I won’t abandon you in the next few weeks, Dear Journal Readers, so please don’t abandon me!
Right now I’m getting ready for a nature walk. Fill you in next week!
