It’s Thanksgiving again and the perfect time to update the list of the many good things that have happened to me since last Thanksgiving and to remember people and events without which I wouldn’t be who I am. Here’s my list, not in any particular order of importance:
I’m grateful to:
— Jo Jo Three Fingers for sending his recipe for lasagna via email. “Sylvia, doll, you don’t give nobody dis family recipe or you go missing. Ha, Ha! Just teasing.” (Oh, sure.)
— Mr. Francis of the Francis Gallery for giving me my first watercolor exhibit and for showing me when wearing too much bronzer is too much.

— Scorpion for appreciating my art and making me tingle in the autumn of my years.
— Aunt Daisy for being Aunt Daisy, a cowgirl’s cowgirl.
— Enrique my yummy gardener who trims the bushes into pyramids, chickens, and spheres while wearing short shorts.
— My first fiancé Baxter for teaching me there’s more to life than making Raku pottery.
— My friends from Martini Cove Sky and Lucia and their champagne lifestyle.
— Cutlass and Bobo for their colorful friendship and the time I hurt my knee when they visited dressed as nurses bringing extra large cheesy pizzas.
I’m grateful to one last (I hope!) glimpse of my grade school nemesis, Fiona Blaha. Letting go of old hurts is sweet.
— Myrna for not bringing Otto on her first visit and for leaving. For their upcoming visit together, I have doubts.
— Loyal Salsa the Chihuahua we found in the park and who makes us laugh.
— Mamacita, our cat, who jumped over the garden wall one day and gave birth to Pico and Ajo in the bodega. Meowing for food first thing in the morning, they’re more dependable than an alarm clock.
— Max the rock I cling to who keeps us afloat in a sea of carved vegetables.
Last but not least:
— My readers, subscribers and commenters! Without your appreciation and support, where would I be?
Bobo and Cutlass will be joining us for dinner and they are bringing guests, so have to fly. It’s time to retract my pen and close my journal.
The dining room table has been set with colorful talavera plates, antique silver, crystal glasses and lace edged napkins. Max has created a bountiful centerpiece with tiny squashes and salmon colored roses. He’s in the kitchen busy assembling crab cakes with horseradish cream and the porcini and pecan pate for the bruchettas. There are bags of vegetables to be cleaned and pealed, a tin of muffin cups to be filled with buttery onion cornbread dressing, cranberry orange chutney to be cooked, a turkey to be readied for roasting, potatoes to be whipped, and tiramisu to be assembled.
I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving Day. May all your travels and plans go smoothly and may your turkey be perfectly done and juicy! Buen provecho!
